Punky “Churchwood” Bowl – Aqua
Working with poplar, especially spalted poplar, requires courage and dedication. These raw materials were salvaged from an old growth poplar tree that fell over a year ago and generously donated by St. Luke’s Lutheran Church of Surrey, BC.
Despite the tree being down for over a year, the wood remains highly saturated and demands specialized drying techniques for stabilization. After proper drying, the spongy soft materials are meticulously removed by hand, leaving only the hard wood. The removed areas are then replaced with vibrant colors of food grade epoxy to accentuate the natural beauty of the remaining wood. This process requires extra love and attention, but the end result is a stunning piece of art crafted from a challenging material.
This piece suffered from thermal cracking during the polymer hardening process. But this does not take away from it’s beauty.
